From an "ambulance" converted from a
personal truck and a small donated room in Tecali (trailer) Park. That was how Rescate de San Carlos started in 1978.. Park residents "Dr. Don" and Maria Morgan constituted the original staff. Don had been a medical corpsman and Maria a nurse. Shortly thereafter, Dr. José Canale opened his practice in San Carlos and was very helpful, and continues to be. In the early days, Dr. Canale sometimes dug into his pocket for gas money for the truck-ambulance. Rusty and Ronnie Price, Bill and Virginia Jackson, Jack and Jeanne Burns as well as Mo and Jim Overman were all involved in the early days and helped establish the original charter. Gold card memberships have always been the keystone of Rescate's fundraising program. The indefatigable Katie Petsch covered Shangri-La Park and tireless workers like Ed McKinney have followed in her footsteps. Other fundraising activities, reports Bill Jackson, included getting on the C.B. (radio) and auctioning off grandchildren, wives, and other services. Soon the operation outgrew its one-room quarters at Tecali nd rented the building, which is now Carlos' Restaurant. The necessity for our own building became more pressing and with gifts of $1000 each from 11 people, the down payment onthe current headquarters was made in 1991, and a loan was secured for the balance. Club Deportivo offered their building for "mortgage breakfasts". Bill Jackson's determination and leadership carried these breakfasts every year from 1991 to the present day. San Carlos Days Committee of 1991-92 provided additional significant funds for the mortgage and for the purcase of a defibrillator. Fundraising became more intensive when Rescate Auxiliary was founded in 1991. Currently involving 52 members, this organization was born from a meeting of 5 founders, Bill and Virginia Jackson, Sarah Hupp, Shirley Neill, and Sophia Gorham. Every year the auxiliary has topped its previous achievements, raising about half of Rescate's budget with an annual bazaar, fish frys, card parties, golf and fishing tournaments, and merchandise sales. And now in 1999, Your Rescate, Our Rescate, Everybody's Rescate, From Club Med to Mexico 15 -- with three ambulances, a well-equipped infirmary, and a full-time well-trained personnel, 365 days a year. |
The annual Rescate Bazaar, the primary fund raiser for supporting operations of Rescate, was held Saturday, February 27th this year. | The bazaar is an all-day affair -- starting at 8 a.m. and finishing with the auction around 3 in the afternoon. |

Workers are setting up materials for booths while a line of people, four abreast, wait for the gates to the rummage sale area to open. Although the gate is scheduled to open at 8 a.m., the line began forming shortly after 7. | |

waiting to select their bargains. Volunteers are also ready to help customers. |

Within minutes of the gates opening, items were snatched from the tables. | ![]() |
Several buyers carefully study rummage items before making a final selection. |
Ten tables piled with clothing originally piled neatly were soon a jumble of rummage. It seems that it sells better when a person needs to "rummage" through the piles. | ![]() |

There was live music to entertain people while they were shopping, looking, eating, or just resting in the shade of the Tecate tent. |

The Humane Society of San Carlos, officially called
Sociedad de Benefactora y Proteccion de Animal, de San Carlos,
sponsored a book booth to raise money for the Spay/Neuter Clinic as well
as for Rescate. We are hoping to have a website for the Humane Society
in the near future so you can learn more about it. |

After starting with 3 large tables covered with books and receiving boxes of donations during the day, we took home about half as many books as we brought to the bazaar. | ![]() |

One of the members of the Humane Society brought four puppies
for adoption. Do you think this child is happy to have one of the puppies? |

The children steal the show, as usual, even in a retirement
community such as San Carlos. These children wait at the exit gate for their mother to finish shopping. |

Starting with breakfast menus, food was served all day from 8 until 2 in the afternoon. There was a combination of Mexican and U.S. type food, even desserts. | As usual, the event was a huge success raising a total of more than $10,000 towards keeping the only emergency medical facility of San Carlos open for another year. |
